Stunning DIY Fireplace Ideas: One Room Challenge Weeks 4-6

One Room Challenge Week 6 is here! Progress so far? Framing, drywalling, and mudding the entire fireplace bump-out. Oh, and installing the actual fireplace insert, but that was SUPER easy, thanks to this amazing electric fireplace insert from Touchstone Home. I just plugged it in and used screws to secure it. Hard work, ya know.

Touchstone Home inserts are great because they have a lot of different options for easy installation – you can even use it for a wall-mounted fireplace! You don’t have to build an entire fireplace wall like I did. It’s the perfect choice for any of your DIY fireplace ideas! I chose this model for the more traditional shape, and I love the mesh screen because it reminds me of real wood fireplaces of bygone days.

You know my design style isn’t very modern. I veer more toward the traditional, which is why I chose this mesh screen model. But for those of you who love a modern look, Touchstone has some beautiful modern fireplaces too!

Fireplace Surround Ideas

Up next is the actual design of this fireplace surround. My living room has 14 foot vaulted ceilings and I chose this wall for the fireplace feature wall to fill the blank space. Even unfinished, it’s makes such a big impact already! It draws the eye up and makes the whole living space feel grander, unlike before – a blank, basic wall. Huge difference!

I can picture it already! Looks wonky in this photo but not once I’m done with it!

I wanted this new fireplace to be a statement piece, but not get so elaborate that this DIY project turned into a nightmare, ages long project! The goal is give it a sleek yet traditional design. In the past, I’ve gone for a more rustic look. See the photos of my previous DIY fireplace makeover, which has a more farmhouse look. This time I’m going for a different style – marble surround, waterfall mantel, and maybe even a faux stone veneer (but that depends on time constraints!)

Here are some fireplaces I love…

Wouldn’t it be nice to have this stone surround?! That’s a little bit out of my budget and probably out of my DIY capabilities, but I can still achieve the sleek waterfall mantle shape.  I plan on doing this with wood. I’m going to paint mine white, but you could also add a lime wash or faux concrete finish. Using Venetian plaster is a also great way to give a stone look to your DIY mantel.

For this One Room Challenge project, I’m aiming for something more like the image above. I found some affordable marble pattern floor tile at Lowes and attempting to cut them down just right to get a “marble surround”.

This will need lots of caulking and paint!

Next Steps…

The next step is to get this tile cut to finish the surround. To be honest, I’m a bit behind on this eight-week challenge, since there are only two weeks left and I still have to finish the built-ins and install my vertical shiplap! But this part was the “puzzle”, and a lot of trial an error, whereas the rest I know the plan. Stay tuned for the results!!
