Corner Fireplace Makeover: Vertical Shiplap + Marble Picket Tile

The corner fireplace in the family room had me stumped. Corner fireplaces can be charming, especially in an older character home, but ours is awkwardly next to a large window and a long blank wall. It really skews the layout of the family room. True to 90s style, our fireplace was built with no overmantel, which drove me crazy. Time for a corner fireplace makeover!

Our Fireplace Renovation

My main goals for the fireplace makeover:

  • Build out an overmantel, to make it look like a “real” fireplace
  • Minimize bulk to maximize square footage
  • Incorporate traditional moulding with contemporary tile for a total refresh

We took it down to the studs, and left the fireplace insert. Then came new drywall, plus framing for the overmantel. I opted for a fairly traditional painted white moulding and marble picket tile for the surround – a touch of modern.

I actually started off with a faux-concrete overmantel (see below photo), which was so much fun to apply and really looked like concrete! Somehow it just didn’t look right to me. I ended up covering all my hard work with white vertical shiplap. This looked like it belonged!

Almost decided to live with this faux concrete

How to Style Your Fireplace

I kind of have a vertical line theme going in this house, so it worked out perfectly. I painted the shiplap in Sherwin Williams White Flour, the same as the lower surround. I went with a simple, thin, alder wood mantel to bring in some natural elements.

To my dismay, this was the best spot for the TV, so a vintage credenza displays the art and books I would otherwise showcase on the mantel. I recommend this for anyone who has to settle for the ol’ TV/fireplace combo. Create another focal point on a console table or shelf, anchoring with canvas art or an extra large vase. That way the TV has to something to compete with for focal attention.

Our new fireplace is stylish, neutral and unimposing, giving way for the rest of the room to shine!
